The story of Lot’s wife isn’t all that startling to me. Okay, her becoming a pillar of salt aside, she has a lot more common with most of us than we realize.
She too had a bad habit of looking back.
The lure of what has happened can become stronger than it should when we allow our focus to be shifted.
I can honestly now look back on many events which caused me great pain when they occurred, some for many years, and discuss them without the emotional trauma arising.
When God reminds us to let go, it is always for our betterment….
- Letting go of unforgiveness frees our soul.
- Letting go of our pain lightens our load.
- Letting go of our past frees our future.
Without doing all three, we limit ourselves to stumbling or standing in place, instead of moving forward.
Jesus not only modelled forgiveness, giving over His pain and placing the past in His Father’s hands, He showed us how we too could do so in Hebrews 12.
Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how He did it. Because He never lost sight of where He was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—He could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now He’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility He plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls! Hebrews 12:2-3 MSG
The key? Keeping our focus on what is ahead… the hope we have knowing He walks beside us and the future He has promised us with Him in heaven.
Jesus knew what was awaiting Him on the other side of the cross.
Life. Heaven. His throne.
Restoration. Enemy defeat.
And He was able to endure the horrors, pain and every hardship of the cross by keeping His focus on His purpose.
If you struggle with your tendency to look back in the rearview mirror, ask God to show you the freedom He has waiting for you as you leave your heavy loads behind, buried at the foot of the cross on the side of the road you are walking.
Because God wants your freedom even more than you do, Beloved.
- Invite Him to highlight what He wants you to leave behind right now.
- Welcome an increased sense of His Presence.
- Watch and see the change He is going to make in rewriting your story for His glory!
