LOST IN WONDER: Unexpected Provision

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace Isaiah 9:6 ESV

When seven months pregnant with our second child, my husband had to choose between waiting to see if he still had a job after a pending hospital merger, or taking a package and looking for alternate work.

With no savings, the thought of no roof over our heads while bringing a child into the world was frightening.

Unsure what to do, we prayed and asked for wisdom that Advent. Our family faced an unknown road, but knew the God who was walking with us every step of the journey. We waited to see how He would deliver us.

Not unlike Elizabeth and Zechariah, finally delivered of their son of promise after years of barrenness and a season of silence. Not unlike Joseph and Mary, obediently traveling to Bethlehem, not knowing where they would lay their heads when they arrived.

Yet God took care of His earthly family. He sent angels to speak encouragement and direction. Jesus was safely delivered of Mary under the roof God raised up for them, before Wise Men brought them the provisions they would need for the road ahead, after shepherds gazed in wonder.

God unexpectedly brought them all together to form the very community Jesus needed to support Him as He entered our world.

The way God may provide for your family may also arrive unexpectedly, as did the gift of Jesus to a world desperately seeking connection, longing for God to come close and meet them in their need. As part of His family, He reminds us every Christmas He came to do just so for each of us.

God not only provided wisdom, but raised up a community to help support me when my husband miraculously started work when my son was four days old. Jesus brought us peace beyond understanding that season, and has continued to do so ever since.

Jesus, may we each see how You are providing for us, and how Your heart longs to care for each one in Your family, always.
