I am away on vacation, and missing my community in a way I have never experienced before. Its been a while since I have had a longer than a weekend get away, especially with a few hours completely to myself….and I have come to realize there is a great deal of wisdom in that phrase, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
As a word girl, having time to write, sing and read is important to my daily life.
Yet those three are not enough.
I need words spoken over and into me as well.
My primary love language is words, and what I miss most about being away from my loved ones is hearing their encouragement, wisdom, humor. And actually being around them.
I was shocked to realize that I am no longer a loner,
I miss my community.
My family, my best friends, my church, my coworkers, my neighbors.
I have realized that God never designed for me to be a loner either. The fact that I am uniquely hardwired was never meant to be a way of classifying me to the outskirts, which is what happened in high school, and many of the churches I have attended.
My skill set isn’t common, but community? Neither is yours. Its unique, just like you!
When we come together, the body that is made up of our communal giftedness blesses His heart.
For when two or three are gathered, He is there with us.
Just as God is three in one, we are designed to be the same.
Ourselves on our own, ourselves in Him, and ourselves in community.
When we are fully walking out our giftedness and calling, not only is God blessed, but we are blessed, and so are those in the community around us,
Take away the aspect of community and you don’t have any impact outside of yourself.
Which is why this verse below whammies me every time I see it.
Don’t give up meeting together. Encourage one another. Hebrews 10:25
Because God knows we need one another to help encourage and sharpen one another to be the best we can be.
Even in the hard seasons of grief, loneliness, depression or desperation….God designed us to need one another in community.
Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. 2 Corinthians 13:11
We are to strive, press forward and hold on to one another as we live life, Beloved.
For there is a sweetness in the friendship we find in community which echoes throughout heaven.
Like the sacramental use of water and bread and wine, friendship takes what is common in human experience and turns it into something. Eugene Peterson
The One who unites us designed us to celebrate diversity as we gather to celebrate our commonality in being His.
And you may get a glimpse of God or word from His heart you wouldn’t otherwise experience but for community.
