Father me

A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.  God sets the lonely in families, He leads forth the prisoners with singing. Psalm 68:5-6 (NIV)

Fatherto theFatherless

I was four when God began to answer my unspoken prayer for a father.  My still young mom was an unexpected widow with two small children when she began to date again.  I know now my mom was very tired from carrying the weight of everything solely on her shoulders, and likely lonely for conversation beyond Sesame Street.  I just knew I missed both my parents, for when my father died and she had to go to work full-time, I didn’t particularly like being at the babysitter’s.

My soon to be father spent time getting to know me, taking me for walks where he would hold my hand, let me chatter away and patiently answer my constant stream of questions—“Why is the sky blue? Why is the grass green?”

God met all our needs through my dad’s willingness to step in and love. When he married my mother, God positioned my dad to not only be a husband but also a father to the orphans—my brother and I. His love helped release us from the prisons of grief and loneliness, bringing a new song of joy to all our hearts.

My dad & I 🙂

God the Father not only does the same, He does it on a fantastically grand scale.

His love is for all who are lonely. He longs to defend all the widows. He desires to set all those imprisoned free. He delights to sing over us all (Zephaniah 3:17).

Most of all, God longs for us to come to Him, so He can father us each in the way we need and yearn for.

God wants to lavish His love upon us, so we will know we are His children, forevermore!

If you too have a gap in your life and heart, invite God to come in and father you.  He can hardly wait to love up on you when you do.
