seeing past the trappings of wrapping

These past several weeks, I have been spending time in Proverbs, as well as the Psalms, and was struck by the depth of simplistically worded yet packed with power wisdom found there.

Especially in the second last verse of the last chapter.

Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Proverbs 31:30 MSG

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30 ESV

Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30 AMP

The gist of this verse, which He drew my attention to today?

Its what’s on the inside that is truly worth seeing.

But “beauty is only skin deep, isn’t it?” After all, it is easy to think of beauty the way the world sees it. What catches their eyes, on the surface. The trappings of the wrapping, so to speak. Stars are born, politicians elected, models revered – because they look good.

But are they good under the surface?

What is revealed under the exterior?

True beauty? The kind that God is attracted to, and as His people we should be likewise attracted to?

Not the size of the waistband, but the expanse of a loving heart.

Not the color of our skin, but the kindness expressed through our actions.

Not the designer duds we are wearing, but instead highlighting the work of our Designer.

Not a perfectly made up face, but lips and minds which choose to forgive and make up.

Not an insecure character needing to be applauded for what we have done, but someone who displays confidence, because of their security in Whose they are.

Someone who praises her Maker, instead of making themselves over in such a way they demand praise.

Someone who speaks truth to help build up, not charmingly clad lies to try and tear down another to get further ahead.

Someone whose inner beauty radiates from deep within, despite having less than perfect facial structure.

Someone like you and I, Beloved.

Living a life poured out for Him is to be the pinnacle of our story here on earth. Hearing Him say, “Well done, Beloved.”

Not living our lives caught up in focusing only on the outer trappings of our exterior.

Now I believe God is honored when we take care of ourselves, but not when it consumes our focus, time and the majority of our resources.

So join me in committing to live as women and men who pursue God first and foremost, and who can see the value in one another beyond each other’s outer wrappings, encouraging and calling to life the godly attributes of heaven over the trappings of earth.
